Latin Name : Ilex aquifolium

Holly is evergreen and extremely hardy. Mostly with prickly leaves, so mind out for eyes and faces, although some have a more rounded and less undulating leaf. Shade tolerant, and can be cut hard back if necessary. Also used widely in formal garden for topiary work. It also makes the most mouth wateringly wonderful crackling sounds when being burned on a bonfire !

Holly Flowers

Often going unseen, these flowers obviously have to preceed the berries.

There are many variegated Hollies available. However some are male and some female, so if it’s berries you are after, ask first.
