Flowering Currant

Latin Name : Ribes sanguineum

Probably amongst the earliest flowering shrubs of the year, the Flowering Currant starts to bud up at the end of January, in sheltered places. Unlike many common flowers in early spring, which are in many cases yellow, this shrub sports red/pink flowers which hang from its branches . It’s latin name Ribes explains away why the popular black currant drink has the name that it is given.

The palmate leaf gives off the aroma of currents when rubbed.

This white variety is called ‘White Icicle’.
