Corylopsis

(Its Common and Latin Name)

Belonging to the Family Hamamelidaceae, this shrub is related to the Witch Hazel. The image is of Corylopsis spicata, which is a Hazel-like shrub which has long racemes of scented bright yellow flowers, up to 15 Cms long, presented just before the leaves appear.

It is easy to grow and as you can see from the flowers, has a significant presence. Yet it is not seen often enough.

The leaves, as with the Witch Hazel are very similar in size and appearance to Hazel (Corylus avelana), and as the image below of Corylopsis pauciflora demonstrates, it’s not shy in the autumn either.
