Hazel

Latin Name : Corylus avellana

This is the first image you see every year when the Hazel becomes first noticeable. Covered in the male yellow catkins, it is also responsible for the first opportunity for Hayfever sufferers to be exposed to lots of pollen.

And here, the little red flower, never usually even noticed by most people. This of course produces the Hazel Nut.

A green leaf which when young often has red/brown markings in the middle

The purple-leaf variety called Corylus maxima ‘Purpurea’ is the Purple-Leaf Filbert.

As can be seen from this image, and with its fresh young growth, it is an attractive shrub and well worth considering if you’re looking for purple foliage.

‘Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick’ – Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’ is sometimes referred to as the twisted Hazel. It brings an interesting silhuette in the winter as this image shows.

As this image shows, the leaf is twisted as well. The flowers aren’t …

… and the nuts come along as normal too.
