How to Avoid Root Rock

If you have fast growing summer flowering shrubs like this Buddleia ….

Or like this Lavatera …

Or tall growing Rose bushes, they can all be very susceptible to a condition called Root Rock.
All this really means is that they can easily be blown over in winter gales because of their huge top growth. A growth that cannot be supported without threatening to uproot the whole plant.

So now, before Christmas is upon us, is a very good time to reduce them back by about half their height. This will help to protect the root from being damaged by high winds. Don’t cut them too low just yet, but leave that till maybe March, as a bit of top growth will also protect against frost damage.
